Sometimes in life we get so caught up in the rush of the fulfillment we are wanting. We are always living in the future, wishing for the future, working toward the future, thinking about what the future has in store and forgetting about the present moment. So many people work so incredibly hard to achieve their goal for money and success. They stay up so late, don’t sleep enough, decline all opportunities to be with friends and family because they believe they must spend all of their free time working their future. I absolutely admire their hard work and dedication so very much. But I often seem to wonder, throughout all the the years they have said no to outings with friends, no to events, no to life’s opportunities that have been given to them…what have they missed out on? What would their life be like if they had said yes? Would they be happier if they had said yes? Would they feel more successful in life even if the money isn’t even close to what they have now accomplished?
“Success” is a word that means so many different things to so many different people. And so many people get caught up in it and work their life away. For many people it means the amount of money in their bank account. And for many others it means love. It means friendships. It means wellbeing. It means happiness with their hobbies and their day to day life. It means laughing constantly each and everyday. It means laughing so hard with a friend that you spill that glass of wine all over you’re brand new t-shirt. But it gives you so much joy because now you have a fantastic memory with a friend. Success can be measured in so many different ways. It is just the way you perceive it. And the way you perceive it will determine your success in life. The most simple little things bring the most joy in life. And being able to share incredible, memorable moments with people that you care about which you will remember for ever…that is success.
I am not saying it is not good to be a hard worker and that one will miss out on life. All I’m saying is that there is a balance that can be had. You can have both successes once you balance them both out and put the same amount of effort into each. Effort into work. Effort into the loved ones who surround us. Work into our hobbies that bring us happiness. Our minds are so focused on the future that we reject even thinking about what is happening in the present moment in our lives and miss out on the incredible moments that are happening right here, right now..Be present.
Work to live an incredible life. Don’t live your life to work.
